Things to do in Dordogne, France

Rocamadour, Dordogne, France

Dordogne is one of the most beautiful parts of France and you would need to drive to visit these amazing towns and villages:

  • Sarlat – a wonderful medieval town where you can truly imagine how it was in medieval times. Windy narrow streets which come alive at night. In Sarlat, the market days (Wed and Sat) are very interesting. Market stalls, a fascinating people-watching scene, plus street performers day and night.
  • Cenac – a village with one long street and a good market.
  • Domme – the view across the Dordogne is second to none.
  • La Roque Gageac – located right on the Dordogne river with boat trips for 9 euro for an hour which was worth it for a leasurely afternoon. A wonderful village with a castle at the end and buidlings built into the cliffs above.
  • Beynac – small village with a castle on top of the hill, and more windy streets, on the river. Near Beynac – Les Jardins Suspendu de Marqueyssac http://www.marqueyssac.com. Delightful gardens with several surprises above the Dordogne.
  • Perigueaux – 1 hour drive from Sarlat, not such a nice place, its got a big church and a kind of medieval area, it did have some nice markets.
  • Bourdeilles – no tourists and a quaint pretty town, with just a tiny square, couple of restaurants/cafes and an ancient castle int he centre.
  • Brantome – awesome village – built by monks on an island with a huge abbey next to it. The walk around the water is pretty although the centre of the village isn’t special.
  • Les Eyzies – a long narrow village with some touristy shops and some old buildings.
  • St Jean De Cole – another gem, with few tourists, a lovely castle and very old church.
  • Rocamadour – Worth a whole day. Rocamador bills itself as the second pilgrimage sight in France after Mont St. Michel. Can be crowded, arrive either on the late side or very early.
  • Peyrepertuse – unforgettable. Breathtaking (both for the view and the uphill hike). Definitely one of the most memorable things we’ve seen in France.
